SDCC 2014 – Weekend Wrap Up

It’s Sunday NIGHT, Nerdlings!  That means the big SDCC 2014 announcements have all been made, stars have been blinded by flashes, and it’s time for the poor staff to clean up all the glitter, spandex, and whatever that is by NBC’S Hannibal booth… *Shudders*

The star power coming out of SDCC 2014 was so epic last night they created a White Dwarf and the cosplayers leveled up all the Nerdy trophies for Achievement in Awesome. My feeds have been ridiculously difficult to keep up with in the past few days as I tried to swipe quickly through Twitter, Tumbler, Instagram, and websites to get the best Nerdy news. Since it’s impossible to go through it all, I’ll just do a run down of the things I’m most excited to see.

We finally got our first look at Wonder Woman. Look at her! She is an AMAZON! She is sooooo not taking anyone’s crap.  She looks hot (both figurative and literal) and is about to serve up some JUSTICE!

While I still feel some concern about what the actual movie will be like, I have to say, Concept and Costuming got it right. It was pretty funny to see all my feeds go nuts about Gal Gadot and then throw in a nod to the boys, Batman and Superman. DC’s top story on their website is all about Diana Prince and I’m please as punch to see it. Behold, your new Wonder Woman!

Marvel has been throwing news at us all weekend starting with our first official introduction to Agent Carter.

The Marvel Television panel hosted Hayley Atwell and several of the creators, including Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, for Marvel’s newest series, Agent Carter. The show will begin in 1946 before SHIELD was founded and like her One-Shot, we’ll see Peggy adapting to life after WWII. The show hopes to portray the harsh realities of a post war world, which many women faced after the men returned. Skilled and competent women were displaced and expected to return to their roles in the home. Peggy Carter will have to fight to find her place in a man’s world but she’s not alone. Peggy will definitely encounter other women facing the same dilemma. What remains to be seen are what choices they will make when faced with stepping back into old ideas or trying to fit into an unappealing future. I’m really hoping to see some seriously conflicted heroines and grey area, badass lady villains.

San Diego Comic Con Weekend!!

It’s here! SDCC 2014 is definitely a geek holiday. There are so many Nerdy goodies coming out of this weekend that it takes days or even weeks to sort it all out. It’s too big and too vast to know everything until the fairy dust settles. This is a community that lights Nerd news like a boat filled with wildfire, but even the legions of fans can’t keep up with all the cool insider treats.

io9 had a great run down of “The Floor” where you can buy all the new things, many exclusive to SDCC attendees. io9 article here

Nerd makers of all kids flood the scene. Writers, artists, innovators, actors, and industry creators of every variety make appearances first hand. There are more cool Nerds around than you can shake a Mage Staff at!

Here’s a cute article from Yahoo about Bennie’s first day at Comic Con. How Benedict Cumberbatch Won the First Day of Comic Con

Benedict Cumberbatch make a surprise appearance at the Dramworks Panel. I’ve never been so jealous of a penguin in my life.

Then there are the teasers like these. First Marvel released an Antman poster earlier this week, then they gave us a bunch of very tense concept art pieces from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Our heroes look awesome, but they also look totally screwed.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Iron Man sporting new armor

Avengers: Age of Ultron Scarlet Witch (We always refer to her as  ‘That  crazy bitch’)

Avengers: Age of Ultron Captain America giving good jaw.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Black Widow, a glimpse of Hulk, and Mjolnlr . I’d run from all three of those fists.

From DC Comics we gat a sneak peek at Batman’s new duds.

The caped crusader’s new cape!

Close-up of Ben Afleck’s new cowl.

Attendees should always be kind to one another anyway, but an even bigger reason to be kind to your fellow Nerds is you never know who is standing next to you. Celebrities and industry makers want to get in on the fun too so they make it a regular habit of wandering the crowds incognito to experience the Con first hand. Here is an article from last year’s SDCC from BuzzFeed, Matt Smith Walked The Floor At Comic-Con In A Bart Simpson Mask  (yes THAT Matt Smith!) He wanted to hang out on The Floor so he sported a mask and an American accent while he wandered through the crowds. Next time Bart Simpson wants a hug, you might consider it, or a high five at the very least if you don’t do hugs with strangers.

Bart Simpson is really a Time Lord. Explains so much.

It pays to be nice because you never know if you’ve been talking with, say the editor of a favorite comic, or screenplay writer of a favorite show, or a producer of your favorite web series. It’s also much easier to make new Nerdy friends that way too.

More Nerdy goodness to come over the weekend and remember…

Thanks, Keep Calm-O-Matic!

Have fun, Con-goers! We’ll be stalking, er I mean, watching you!

I mean… enjoying your adventures and every movement…

Peering at you from the internet…

It’s just super fun to be part of your lives…

Man, Phil Coulson was right. This fan stuff is hard.

Holy Free Stuff, Batman!

Today is the 75 anniversary of Batman’s first comic.

Lookin good, old man!

Wow, Bruce. You don’t look a day over 41 (so I’ve heard)!

So the Nerdling and I went down to the local Barnes and Noble to check out their version of the Caped Crusader birthday bash.

Iron Man swung by with his tigers on gold leashes to wish Bruce a happy birthday.

Call me impressed. There was a story time, Bruce Wayne approved juice and cookies, trivia, prizes, bat-staches, masks, coloring sheets, buttons, temporary tattoos, bookmarks,  a free comic, giant posters, and a graphic novel sized essential guide to navigating Batman’s 75 year journey.

Thanks, DC and B&N!

Talk about a great gift bag for the party guests!

We also picked up a few non DC items like a full Big Nate book, a Star Wars poster, and ‘How to speak Dothraki’ (Pro-Tip, don’t say thank you) pamphlets from their Get Pop-Cultured month promo. I guess we’ll be coming to a few more of these events over the next month. Fantastic loot from this birthday plunder.

Golly, Batman. I was kidding about the plunder. It was all free, I swear!

My Ramblings About Dragon Age: Origins

My happy band of killers.

My backstory: I’m new to DA and learning everything from game mechanics to modern RPGs. I am a n00b! The last game I played before my son was born was on a PS2 or SIMS on my computer so there has been a HUGE ASS learning curve.

The question from moodyrebelmage was: “Real talk, though, tell me about your companions. How do they make you feel?”

I rambled a bit about Nori, my dwarf, rouge, commoner. I chose her because I was interested in learning about this world from the bottom up and I had just been reading a fic by my friend garafthel from the Hobbit so it fit perfectly for me. After learning about my Origin, I patiently waited for the day when I could come home, rescue my family and my BFF, and kill everything with FIRE! I’ve been told that this is not an option. Boo

scahill42 has a long, confused series of texts from me about this exact thing and my final understanding of what BioWare does. I’m still not over your betrayal, Leske! So, to answer your question.

I take sassy pants Morrigan with me EVERYWHERE! I love her commentary. I love every damn thing about her. We are BFFs now. Take that, back stabbing betrayer, Leske!!! I found myself looking for ways to get approval from her prickly exterior. Like always, I saw a challenge and I said “I must befriend her!” I love her story and feel a strange kinship with her. We couldn’t be more different, but Nori understands coming from nothing and making your own way. I value her thoughts and respect her opinion but don’t always go with it. However, when I learned the grim truth about her past, I was eager to help out and kill that %&$&%* dead.

I LOVE Shale for the same reasons. I thought she was a gay rockman for a long time until someone pointed out that she was in fact, female. Doesn’t matter. I love Shale’s view of things and bring him/her pretty things whenever I can. When I go off to kill things, I like to bring my party of bad ass girls with me; Nori, Morrigan, and Shale. It almost doesn’t matter who else goes with because we do serious damage where ever we end up. I usually bring Allister and he often gets maimed or killed. Poor baby, Sorry! Shale is great. She’s a freakin Gollum! I am amused by her sass and her freakish obsession with birds. I’ll happily kill all those peckers for you, darling!

Allister, sweet, darling, Allister. He’s adorbs. I romanced him right away, or tried to. He’s so bashful and I sometime want to bash him over the head and drag him into my tent, but he’s no Zevron. That’s not how he rolls. My dwarf had a tough life and has a very crusty exterior. She doesn’t like to talk much but she tries to do the right thing. Allister has helped her to learn how to talk more about FEELINGS and other things that people have interests about. Nori has been a good influence on him as well. He was too much of a fragile flower. He’s has an edge now and that’s not a bad thing when you live in Ferelden, me thinks. I was super excited to bring him home and introduce my new boyfriend to my family and friends… but that didn’t really go that way. Stupid Leske. I still don’t know which one of my asshole companions killed him. No one will tell me either! *Pouts* Of course, meeting Allister’s sister didn’t really go that great either. It’s a good thing we’re making our own family then. Right? right? (sigh)

I like Leliana but I don’t use her much since I am a rouge. I listen to her stories, as much as she will share. I’m not for the Chantry life myself but I find their mythology fascinating. I like to take her with me when we go to towns. She brings out Nori’s girlie side but she can hold her own in a fight, which is important. I’m excited to learn more of her SEEEEEECREEEEETS, whenever she trusts me enough to share.

Zevron, LOL! What’s to say? He is funny and flirty and I bring him along for one purpose, dialogue. I was surprised that he got pouty when I decided to hang with Allister but of the two, Zevron was always going to be the one to get over it. I love his friendship and want to get the bugger to tell me more about his backstory but he loves his secrets, doesn’t he?

Wynne, Meh. I think the spirit living in her is very interesting but other than that, I haven’t used her much. I loved the circle tower tour and of course, I sided with the Mages, but I guess I use Morrigan a lot. I kind of feel like Wynne is watching and judging. Not that Morrigan isn’t. Hell, yeah, she’s judging every which way. Wynne feels more like a mom or a grandmother and for some reason, Nori is very uncomfortable around her. Must be her mommy issues. heh

Sten surprises me on a regular basis. Just when I think I’ve got him pegged down, he goes and gets all humorous and I don’t know what to do with that or him! I want to know what REALLY happened at the farm place but maybe I don’t. He’s got my back and will remind me what’s important and sometimes I need that. He’s a good advisor…mostly.

DUG! He’s my doggie. My good little murder puppy! I give him belly rubs and treats whenever I can. He loved me before anyone else ever did and I love him for that. Good boy!

Oghren, I just got him. I’m not super impressed at this point but I have a HUGE bias against my own people. I get all stabby when I see them. I guess it remains to be seen.

So that’s my thinky thoughts on my companions. I swear a lot and get really feisty when I play. I grudgingly do the right thing sometimes, and cross over to the dark side other times. I try to stay the middle path for the most part but hey, a girl’s gotta eat so I can’t be wholesome all the time. I think this group is a good balance. We seem to be a great ragtag crew becoming more like family. I am currently in the deep roads. It’s my last main storyline before the end. I still have a lot of work to do but I can’t wait to see what happens with all those decisions I made.

What could possibly go wrong?

(Yep, I went there)

((I’ll regret that some day))

(((I regret nothing)))

Carol Corps Meet Up At Convergence 2014

tumblr_n8bjbcDTdQ1s0ubwuo1_1280I recently attended my first Carol Corps! In my quest to learn all things Marvel, I’ve gravitated toward Kelly Sue DeConnick and her story of Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel. Not only were the ladies at the meet up extremely welcoming and friendly, but they were all so amazingly talented. From Cosplay geniuses to artists and musicians, these ladies were a variable renaissance of nerdy talent. I left feeling pretty happy that I connected with some new friends and inspired to create…SOMETHING! Our photo above is super cute. I’m the awkward blonde, second from the right.

Because I am fantastic at bumbling my way through life, it wasn’t until much, much later that I realized the third woman from the left was Sigrid Ellis. Of the many hats Sigrid wears, editor of Pretty Deadly at Image Comics and 2 time nominee for the Hugo awards are two hats of note.  Ms. Ellis  strolled up to our group with a huge smile and casual confidence. I thought her to be a founding mother having no idea how close to the mark I was. *facepalm*

The latest incarnation of Captain Marvel is amazing and resonates with many people today. It’s one of my recs for both kids and adults at the bookstore. Carol is a complex character who is trying to find her way through this world, and more importantly, trying to find ways to be comfortable in her own skin. Like all interesting characters, she has moments of strength and weakness.  More than anything else, Carol is a great role model.

This cover art captures my feelings about Captain Marvel perfectly!

If you haven’t read this yet, you totally should. If you have? Come Squee with me!

More than anything else, I’m always grateful to meet new friends who share my nerdy interests. That’s one of the main reasons I go to Cons and other Nerdy events; to find my tribe. I’m looking forward to meeting up with these fine ladies again soon.

Minnesota SpringCon 2014

The Midwest Comic Book Association has been celebrating Nerdiness for 26 years! Time to go check out what they have to offer!

Springcon2014 captain marvel

This picture of my girl, Captain Marvel, totally caught my eye!

I obtained a free ticket from my bookstore to check out Spring Con. Thank you, MCBA!!
I was seriously unprepared for the awesomeness of this Con. Here’s the most amazing thing. It’s run by fans! The feel of a Con run by people who are simply passionate is so different from any corporate run gig. They care so much about the event and find ways to fill the needs for all fans. My ticket bought me two days of entertainment AND helped several charities: MN Food Shelves, MN Lupus Foundation, and Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. All panels were open to everyone and a Heroclix tournament was happening right above our heads.
